Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and many others have changed with way people buy and sell. What began as a way for people to keep in touch with friends and family has become a way for businesses to build a huge following of peers, prospects, and customers. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult to sell by traditional methods.

Their social media content invites me to connect with them on LinkedIn and convinces me to “Follow” them on Twitter. Their Twitter headlines lure me to their website or their blog.

Their blogs give me content that solves my problem or tells me something useful, like how to prolong the life of my 2001 Buick.  Say what?  How does that help the guy who wants to sell me a car? Good question. It helps that guy by establishing him as a person who is interested in what I’m interested in. That makes him my friend. It establishes that guy as an authority and someone I’d trust to sell me a car. When I’m ready.

Truth: The Internet has put sales in the hands of prospects, where it has always been.

People will buy your product or service when they want it or need it. Your job in sales and marketing is:

    • Establish authority
    • Lure people to your Facebook Business Page, your Twitter following, your website, and eventually to your business
    • Spread the word like a virus via social media
